Anna Maria Nicolò, Laura Accetti: autobiographical narration and breakdown

Autobiographical narration goes beyond mere inner recounting. In adolescents presenting severe psychic disorders, there is a more or less delusive construction aimed at organizing a prosthetic or grandiose structure for narcissism. The reconstruction of life’s moments can be an attempt to repair feelings of fragmentation. The autobiography recreated in analysis may then represent a reinvention of oneself.

Gérard Pirlot : the guilty pleasure of remorse … or the one of teeth biting the eye of the unconscious

If in the case of the patient called “ Didier ” described by Bonnet, a whole psychotherapeutic work is necessary, once the narcissistic bases have been consolidated, to make remorse appear as the starting point of a genuine psychoanalytical work, things can be very different with a neurotic patient. Remorse, sometimes there from the start, actually attests to a too great attachment to the maternal imago, which then limits any possibility of subjectively assumed guilt. Thus the author, using a clinical vignette of a subject in analysis, after having brought remorse nearer to reproach and evoked the link between remorse and auto-sadism (narcissistic sadism), attempts to define what the term connotes meta-psychologically, following the different French and German etymologies of the term “ remorse ”… The drive economy of remorse reveals itself to be a putting into play of oral sadism mixed with scopic and controlling drives ; its dynamic is a conflict of psychical forces which may extend from hallucinatory perceptions (cf. the nightmare) to somatization (dizziness, “ second state ”, etc.) or passage to the act ; and finally, its topic is ego-splitting before the castrating omnipotence of a maternal and totemic superego ( “ an eye for an eye ”). In the sado-anal regression which characterizes it, remorse is a form of return of psychical function into the “ primitive cavity ” described by Spitz, which then serves as a “ container ” for the ego’s Self (its the narcissistic bases). The subject in the throes of remorse, like Cain, or Oedipus at Colonnus, “ crushed ” (subjectively) by a guilt that menaces the cohesion of the Self of his ego, can regress alone in remorse until he “ re-bites ” (re-mord) repeatedly this ego through an “ incisive ” and castrating superego. The therapeutic and analytic treatment of remorse will aim to “ transfer ” on to the psychoanalyst, through speech, the guilt underlying this remorse in order to free it from this self-sadistic auto-erotic muck which is remorse.

Viviane Dubol : prostitution, between bodily orifices and words, an experience of subjectivation ?

This article attempts a clinical reflection about the act of prostitution and the psychical stakes it puts into play. A review of the history of research hypotheses and important moments allows us to stress to what extent knowledge of the anamnesis and traumas is insufficient for understanding the destiny of prostitution. Listening to clinical cases led me to take into account the force of words that have the value of an injunction, such as the “ You’re just a prostitute ” or the “ I’m a prostitute ” constructed by the subject. It is within this context of sensitivity to words that the function of the “ fourth character ” was deployed, as a figure of the social female Other to whom the act of prostitution is addressed and what is at stake in it for the subject. In fact, and this is our working hypothesis, the erotology of some of the prostitute’s tricks would contribute to the construction of oneself through the auto-erotic experiences involving the bodily orifices and what psychoanalysis calls the little a object. What we describe of the “ symbolic trick ” suggests that love is not absent from such a process of subjectivation.

Raymond Cahn : subjectality and subjectivation

Starting with Freud’s originary distinction between subject of the ego and object of the ego, and thus between subjectal and objectal poles, subjectality is conceived of as the process that enables the emergence of a creative, autonomous self, shedding light, through their disturbances, on some essential aspects of the setting and of the counter-transference which determine the possibility or impossibility of genuine psychoanalytical work.

Jacques Dayan : autonomy as value

This article discusses the idea that the concept of responsibility for Self has for several generations been a dominant representation of the relationship between the individual and the socius. One of the principle hypotheses put forward by the author is that the (relative) irresponsibility of the Self is associated with the extent of its delegation of its protection of itself to the state. These modifications would then echo the socio-economic transformations and cross over, as we will show, into the field of the human sciences. They manifest themselves, as far as psychoanalysis is concerned, in an evolution of the complaint and the greater emphasis on « narcissistic » disorders. It is still uncertain whether these transformations have a consistent affect on adolescent behavior beyond the role it seems to have regularly played : that of a social integrator, a ferry from one generation to the next.

Anne Tassel : responsibility without guilt ?

That the sociological coordinates of a certain state of uncertainty forces us to undertake a hermeneutic effort focused on a subjectivity that is meant to become public, and that, giving in to the movement of interiorizing responsibility, we are freed from the guilt that hampers both our acts and our action, the observation made by A. Ehrenberg about contemporary work on adolescence. Though promising, it seems to pass over the more painful aspects, such as guilt anxiety, whose counterpart is the work of fantasy.
