Puccini’s opera Madame Butterfly is a master class in the masochism and melancholy mobilized in the sacrificial behaviors that underlie confinement in adolescence. The authors show how, behind the figure of the naive and passive woman there is the active Madame Butterfly position that fights against separation. Melancholic identifications with the fallen father who committed suicide make it impossible to give up the lost object and obtain freedom in other way except by attacking oneself.

Les auteurs montrent combien derrière la figure de la femme passive et naïve se révèle une position active de Madame Butterfly pour lutter contre la séparation. Les identifications mélancoliques au père déchu et suicidé nourrissent l’impossibilité de renoncer à l’objet perdu et de gagner en liberté autrement qu’en s’attaquant soi-même.
At a time when the practice of the selfie is spreading like wildfire, the presentation of self-portraits created by two young artists (Francesca Woodman, Zhang Huan) will attempt to shed light on the way that these creations can contribute – by capturing the disquiet, the tension that is proper to the pubertary – to the subject’s ability to appropriate metamorphosis for use in subjectalisation. Engaging in such a creative process is never without risk, particularly the risk of breakdown or self-destruction.
