Philippe Gutton : pubertary sublimation

This text brings together earlier work using various approaches, in order better to define pubertary sublimation. It is a set of processes involving the pubertary experience towards subjectalization and adolescent objectalization. It is expressed at the level of the archaic through the interpretation that the extended infantile brings to pubertary traces. Secondarily, it presides over the construction of the ideals of adolescence. If subjectalization is in fact an inter-subjectalization, one can speak of a co-sublimation which has its origins in the state of pubertary illusion and disillusionment. The parental subject of the transference is its mouthpiece. The prevailing process of adolescent creation, sublimation would here be organized by the control compulsion of the Ego and its ideals as they have been rearranged between childhood and adolescence.

Philippe Gutton : transgressing or transcribing

When the author (M. Hatzfeld) speaks of the « wild vitality » that shoots up in the wake of youth, I think that it is the adolescent processes which make adolescence alive, pubertary sublimation wrongly interpreted as transgression by the social response. Creative freedom, if we conceive of it in this way, never comes alone.

Philippe Gutton : introduction

The objective of this working day with A. Ehrenberg Going is to go back to the theses of La Société du malaise (2010) in the field of adolescence and youth. The individual must not only rely on his personal capacities, in particular his competence, but also on « his subjectivity, his inwardness ». « Individual (“ liberated ”) subjectivity is at the forefront. »

We would suggest that the author’s methodology not refer exclusively to character disorders, as is usually done, but to adolescence as a set of processes of creation and a well-known high point in the process of narcissistic individuation. How does the duel, united movement of de-institutionalizing and psychologizing social relations cause adolescents to suffer, perhaps in an exemplary way, in their supposed normalness and in their contemporary pathologies ? How does this evolution change youths in return ?

Philippe Gutton : paradoxes in metamorphosis

Metamorphosis establishes a paradoxical contradiction between originality and program, « hazard and necessity », disorder and order, difference and similarity, subject and subjection, making possible a reflection between sublimation and control. Also paradoxical is its happening in time, for the illusion of the pubertaire is creative insofar as there is oscillation between it and disillusion. Repeat R. Kaës’ fundamental adage whose paradoxical character cannot be missed : « The subject is first of all an inter-subject », the pubertary metamorphosis is in an exemplary way that of the inter-subject : it includes the other in its very procedure. There is no solitary structural change. The pubertaire is not a (re)finding of the object but a revelation of genital alterity

The « metamorphic contract » is singularly enlarged when it connotes the ongoing creation of a bond between subject and society, individual and group, singular discourse and cultural referent.
