Using discussions, and published and unpublished texts, this article shows that reference to the nymph in the work of Pierre Fédida, following the example of Nabokov’s Lolita, was part of an important theoretical construction regarding temporal representation in the Oedipus complex. The latter may be envisioned from the perspective of aging or of rejuvenation. This debate is retraced here, with an explanation of the background behind the research. P. Fédida constructed a nymphette complex that is useful for diagnostic purposes. This is an interesting idea in psychoanalytical theory that ties in with the work of Freud and Lacan on the signification of the young girl in psychical life, and more particularly in male psychology. The young girl receives a phallic over-investment because of the castration anxiety she provokes, inspiring a horror of the mature woman, and at the same time helping to overcome this by introducing the figure of a girl who plays on her pre-maturity. But it is not easy to define the age either of the nymphette or of person she’s intended for. Clinical examples allow for relative flexibility in determining the real age. The nymphette complex rests therefore on a paradoxical situation.

En se servant des discussions, des inédits et des textes publiés, l’article montre que la référence à la nymphe chez P. Fédida, à l’exemple du texte de Nabokov sur Lolita, faisait partie d’une construction théorique importante relative à la représentation temporelle dans le complexe d’Œdipe. Celui-ci peut se concevoir des points de vue du vieillissement ou du rajeunissement. Ce débat est retracé ici, tout en expliquant l’arrière-plan de la recherche. P. Fédida a construit un complexe de la nymphette qui a une valeur diagnostique. C’est une idée intéressante dans la théorie psychanalytique qui renoue avec des travaux de Freud et de J. Lacan sur la signification de la jeune fille dans la vie psychique et plus particulièrement dans la psychologie masculine. La jeune fille reçoit un surinvestissement phallique en raison du complexe de castration qu’elle suscite. L’existence de la nymphette renvoie à ce complexe de castration, inspirant l’horreur de la femme mûre, et elle permet en même temps de le surmonter en introduisant cette figure d’une fille qui joue de sa prématurité. Toutefois, on ne peut pas fixer aisément l’âge ni de la nymphette ni de son destinataire. Les exemples cliniques autorisent une relative élasticité dans l’attribution de l’âge réel. Le complexe de la nymphette repose donc sur une situation paradoxale.
